Chin augmentation is now considered the fastest growing plastic surgery procedure in the US. According to a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons , chin implant procedures have increased by an amazing 71 percent since just last year. So what is behind this new found obsession with chins?
Many speculate that technology is fueling this plastic surgery phenomenon. With the majority of Americans regularly engaging in social media outlets such as Facebook and Skype, there is an increasing tendency to notice aspects of one’s appearance which were never recognized prior to video chatting and unflattering“tagged” photos which, for many, include the occasional “double chin” shot.
The chin may be particularly bothersome to many as this, along with the jawline, is one of the first facial regions that begin to reveal signs of aging. A chin implant can restore youth or provide a sharper, more pronounced lower face and ultimately allow for an aesthetically pleasing balance.
Chin Augmentation Surgery: What to Expect
During a chin augmentation (mentoplasty), a small incision is either placed under the jawline, lower lip or inside the mouth at the gum line. A solid, silicone implant is then inserted into the incision. Finally, the incision is sewn together with sutures. When the incision is made from inside the mouth, sutures are not visible. Recovery usually lasts for a week and it is recommended that mentoplasty patients refrain from strenuous activities for 3 to 6 weeks following the surgery.
Unlike breast implants, which are not intended as permanent devices, chin implants are intended to last a lifetime which means the patient will not ever have to replace the chin implant device.
